In this make-and-take-style class, you will learn more advanced leatherworking skills while you make a Leather Bag.
Each student will receive a “Kit” which includes precut pieces of leather (lasered) and the necessary hardware and fixtures to complete this bag.
In this class you will learn leatherworking steps such as:
- How leather patterns are set up
- How to assemble a leather bag using a pattern
- Edging and Burnishing
- Conditioning and leather care
- Skivving and when to do so
- Hand sewing with overview of lasercut holes vs punched holes
- Riveting with a Hand Press (and without)
- Strap making if you want to make the bag into a purse
- Adding hardware
All tools, leather, and hardware will be provided.
- This bag has an accent piece in the center that could be done with a different design (lasered, marbled, or UV printed). If you would like to do something other than what is pictured, please let the instructor know at least one week in advance and work with them to get the blank leather disc to do so.
- Colors of the bags will be based on material availability; the instructor will bring options to choose from, first come first serve.
Prerequisites: While this is considered an advanced class, you do not need any prerequisite skills to attend, all needed skills will be taught.
This class will meet in the main room at the Leesburg location.
—------Important notes about scheduling—-----
This class is formatted in such a way that you may take the first class, get your instructions and kit, and then finish the project on your own. Or you may sign up for additional classes at a lowered price point to continue working on the project under the guidance of the instructor until it’s finished. (It is anticipated that it will take approximately 2-3 classes to complete the bike bag.) This is very beneficial for newer leather workers to make sure the instructor is available to ask any questions.
This class must have a minimum of 2 students signed up for each day or the class may be rescheduled to a later date. The 2 students can be a mix of first class and continuing classes. If signing up within 24 hours of your first class, please let the instructor know so a kit can be prepped. Working spots do not need a heads up beforehand unless there are less than 2 students registered.
No refunds will be given if a cancellation is received less than 48 hours before the first class. If you need to cancel within 48 hours of the first class, you may give your spot to a different student.
Makersmiths Members are welcome to use the tools in the leatherworking shop to work on the project on your own and sign up for the additional classes only if necessary.
This class will meet in the main room at MS-L.
